KUCHING: Angkatan Zaman Mansang (AZAM) Sarawak strengthened community digital literacy through its Canva Training 2.0 programme, attracting 27 participants from diverse backgrounds keen to improve visual communication skills.

The capacity-building initiative followed the success of Canva Training 1.0, previously conducted exclusively for AZAM staff, board members and AZAM Young Souls, before being opened to the public.

Chief Executive Officer, Ali Suhaili, said in a press statement that digital communication skills were essential in preparing communities, particularly youths, for today’s rapidly evolving communication landscape.

“Youths are no longer merely technology users but content creators, information disseminators and agents of change. They must be equipped with relevant digital communication skills to produce creative, effective and impactful content,” he stressed.

Ali added that AZAM would continue providing learning platforms to help more youths and communities enhance their competencies while leveraging technology for personal, organisational and community development.

Participants received hands-on training in graphic design, branding, visual storytelling, presentation preparation and social media content creation using Canva, enabling them to develop practical communication materials applicable within their organisations and businesses.

The programme also aligned with AZAM’s renewed direction as a communication-focused organisation committed to strengthening community capacity through education, knowledge sharing and participatory communication approaches.

Sarawak AZAM’s former general manager and retiree, Zabariah Matali, described the training as informative, saying she acquired valuable new skills despite previously having little knowledge of Canva and its applications.

She also suggested AZAM organise dedicated sessions for senior citizens, noting that a slower-paced and structured learning approach would help older participants gain confidence using digital platforms.

Media practitioner Jude Toyat, who attended the programme, said digital competency had become indispensable in modern journalism, where compelling visual content complemented strong writing to engage audiences effectively.

Encouraged by positive feedback, AZAM will organise Canva Training 3.0 on July 12 in Sibu with the Bawang Assan community.
