KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and the Ministry of Finance Malaysia (MOF) are joining forces to boost community empowerment and sustainable development through the ‘Komuniti @ UniMADANI’ initiative.

The collaboration held on Wednesday, centred on the ‘Waste to Wealth – Empowering Community Through Green Innovation’ project in Kampung Baru, which transformed used cooking oil into candles and soaps, creating income opportunities while reducing environmental pollution.

Project leader, Professor Dr Zainab Ngaini, said that 80 per cent of the project had been completed, with participants now earning more than RM2,000 monthly through recycling-based activities.

“This project proves that the waste-to-wealth concept not only protects the environment but also transforms rural livelihoods by creating new economic opportunities,” she added.

During an official visit to review the project’s progress, MOF officials commended UNIMAS for its close collaboration with the local community, saying the effort supports the Malaysia MADANI agenda of promoting a sustainable, innovation-driven economy.

The visit concluded with a group photo and exchange of souvenirs between representatives from MOF, UNIMAS and the Kampung Baru community.

The ‘Komuniti @ UniMADANI’ initiative continues to demonstrate how partnerships between universities, government and communities can build resilient, innovative and sustainable societies.
