MIRI: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Miri Maritime Zone detained a passenger vessel and arrested two individuals for multiple offences during an inspection 3.7 nautical miles southwest of Kuala Baram.

Miri Maritime Zone director Captain Mohd Khairol Anuar Saad said the vessel was intercepted at around 9.25 am yesterday (Apr 3) by a patrol boat conducting Op Permai 01/2019, Op Naga Timur, Op Tiris 3.0, and Op Khas Pagar Laut 1/2025.

“The vessel was found to have violated the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1953 by failing to report a change of captain to the port officer.

“It breached the Boat Rules 1953 for not presenting a valid licence during the inspection,” he said in a statement today.

A crew member and a local passenger, aged between 53 and 65, were arrested and taken to the Vessel Detention Centre (PTV) in Miri for further investigation.

Mohd Khairol urged the public to report maritime emergencies, incidents, or complaints via the 999 emergency hotline or by contacting the Miri Maritime Zone Operations Centre at 085-649111 and the Sarawak State Maritime Operations Centre at 082-432544 / 082-432016 for immediate action.
