SIBU: The Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) will not compromise on matters involving party dignity and constituency interests, and will not allow any external interference in its affairs, says its president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

He said the party’s stand is firm, particularly in defending the mandate and interests of the people represented by its elected leaders.

“We are clear in our stand. We will not compromise on matters involving the dignity of the party and our constituencies, especially those involving the interests of the people.

“We will not allow any external parties to interfere in PDP affairs,” he said in his welcoming speech at the PDP Triennial General Assembly 2026 (TGA 2026), officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg here today (May 16).

Tiong said PDP’s position within Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) must be reflected meaningfully in the state’s political landscape, adding that the party must play a stronger role in safeguarding Sarawak’s interests.

He noted that PDP now has about 250,000 members following its expansion, including its 2024 merger with Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB), describing it as a sign of growing public confidence.

“This is not just a number. It represents the strength and confidence of the people in our struggle,” he said.

He also highlighted PDP’s growth since its establishment in 2002 and its 2017 rebranding, which included expanding its reach to Peninsular Malaysia through pro tem divisions for Sarawakians living there.

While reaffirming full support for GPS and the Premier, he stressed that unity within the coalition must be based on fairness and mutual respect.

“Unity is our strength, but it must come with justice. We do not want to be mere observers in the coalition. We want to be decision-makers,” he said.

He said cooperation within GPS must be guided by consensus and respect among component parties and reminded members to remain humble, grounded, and focused on serving the people despite holding positions of power.

He described the TGA 2026 as more than an organisational exercise, calling it a “rebirth” of the party aimed at strengthening unity and strategy ahead.

“PDP will not forget its roots and will not be distracted by power,” he said, adding that the party remains committed to contributing to GPS and achieving electoral success together.

He also called on members to stay united and focused as the party prepares for the next state election, saying PDP’s mission is to serve the people with strength and integrity.
