KUCHING: About 200 students explored the principle of aerodynamics at the PETRONAS Powering Knowledge: Discover PETRONAS @Schools TVET Kuching programme here.

It involved them designing and building their own mini cars to race down a ramp at maximum speed.

The one-day programme held at the Sarawak Technical Excellence Centre (CENTEXS) Santubong on Monday (Sept 8) also included a series of engaging lab workshops conducted by CENTEXS.

In a statement, PETRONAS said the sessions introduced students to areas such as oil and gas, smart building systems, electrical technology, digital innovation, and green energy.
“The participating schools were SMK Santubong, SMK Bandar Samariang, SMK Demak Baru, SMK Tun Abg Haji Openg, SMKA Tun Ahmad Zaidi, and Kolej Datu Patinggi Abg Haji Abdilah,” it said.
These initiatives, aimed at sparking students’ interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) as well as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

“Discover PETRONAS @Schools is an initiative to promote the PETRONAS Education Sponsorship programme in schools across Malaysia.

“Aligned with PETRONAS’ Sustainability Agenda and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, this programme highlights PETRONAS’ commitment to fostering interests in STEM and TVET among young Sarawakians as well as to support Sarawak’s educational and human capital development,” it said.

PETRONAS also said that similar outreach programmes held last year in Sri Aman, Miri, Gedong, and Kapit benefited more than 650 secondary school students.

“Earlier this year, similar events held in Mukah, Baram and Sibu reached out to over 570 secondary school students,” it said.
