Police probe viral video involving Sarawak flag

KUCHING: Police received two reports om Thursday (Aug 20) over a viral video on social media showing a man allegedly stepping on the Sarawak flag.

Kuching Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said preliminary investigations found that the five-second video was uploaded by a TikTok user before being reshared by several other social media accounts.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

“Section 504 of the Penal Code provides for imprisonment of up to two years, or a fine, or both upon conviction.

“Meanwhile, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 provides for a fine of up to RM50,000, imprisonment for up to one year, or both,” he said in a statement.

Alexson also advised members of the public against committing acts that could disturb public order or provoke public anger.

He urged those with information related to the incident to come forward and assist police in the investigation.
