KOTA PADAWAN: A decorated police veteran who once led a counterattack against communist insurgents during his training days was honoured with a special visit by Padawan police in conjunction with the 219th Police Day celebration.

District police chief Supt Mohd Irwan Hafiz Md Radzi, accompanied by senior officers and personnel, visited the residence of Sub-Inspector (Rtd) Mohamad Salim, a recipient of the prestigious Panglima Gagah Berani (PGB) medal, here yesterday (Apr 20).

The visit was more than a routine call, serving as a strong symbol of appreciation by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) for the service, sacrifices and fighting spirit that Mohamad displayed throughout his time in the force.

During the visit, Mohd Irwan handed over welfare aid and took time to check on the 70-year-old’s health and well-being, reflecting the force’s ongoing commitment to caring for its retirees.

The gesture also highlighted how the sacrifices and courage of officers like Mohamad continue to inspire the force, linking the legacy of past servicemen with the present generation.

Born in Simanggang, Mohamad joined PDRM on Nov 1, 1975 as a constable. His extraordinary courage, leadership and heroism earned him the PGB medal on Jun 1, 1977, awarded by the sixth Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the late Tengku Yahya Petra Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Ibrahim.

His act of bravery dated back to Jun 3, 1976, when he was still undergoing basic training with the Police Field Force in Ulu Kinta, Perak.

During an operation at Keramat Pulai forest in Ipoh, his platoon encountered a group of communist insurgents, triggering a fierce firefight.

The initial clash claimed the lives of his instructor Corporal Ridzewan Shaadan and three others.

Despite his lack of experience at the time, Mohamad remained composed and took command of the platoon, organising a counterattack that ultimately neutralised the insurgents.

The operation led to the recovery of valuable intelligence materials, including documents and leaflets.

He further demonstrated leadership by securing the captured enemy campsite and directing several members to leave the jungle to seek assistance.
