MIRI: Miri police rescued a local man from an apparent suicide attempt at Lutong Bridge on Tuesday after officers spent about 15 minutes persuading him not to jump into the river.

Police said they received a report from a member of the public at about 12:40 pm, informing them that a man was attempting to jump from the bridge.

Responding immediately, two officers from the Mobile Patrol Vehicle (MPV) Unit and two officers from the Motorcycle Patrol Unit (URB) of the Miri District Police Headquarters were dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, the officers engaged the man in conversation and spent approximately 15 minutes calming and persuading him to abandon the attempt.

Their efforts were successful, and the man was safely brought to safety without injury.

The man, believed to be in his 20s, was later attended to by an ambulance crew before being taken to hospital for further assessment and treatment.

Miri police commended the swift response of the officers involved, praising them for professionalism and patience which helped prevent the incident from ending in tragedy.

The police also urged members of the public facing personal difficulties to seek support from family members, friends or relevant agencies rather than resorting to self-harm.

The case serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance as the timely report by a member of the public enabled officers to intervene quickly and save a life.
