KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is facing mounting challenges as Malaysians grapple with the rising cost of living and Pakatan Harapan (PH) suffers political setbacks in Sabah.

Political analyst Datuk Peter Minos in his statement said that the Prime Minister must carefully consider issues such as the recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) and the promotion of language skills.

He noted that former deputy president of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Rafizi Ramli recently called for Malaysia to accept the UEC, saying that Malaysians would benefit from mastering English, Mandarin and Bahasa Malaysia.

“China is expected to become a greater economic and military power than the United States by 2050, so learning Mandarin now is wise and useful.

“Anwar must balance these considerations without letting pro-Bahasa Malaysia or anti-English groups influence his decision,” Minos said.

He also highlighted the rising cost of living, which is affecting middle, semi-middle and lower-income households, particularly those earning RM2,000 or less monthly.

He added that subsidies and handouts are insufficient to address income stagnation and failure to act could fuel public dissatisfaction ahead of the next general election.

Commenting on politics, Minos noted that PH and Democratic Action Party (DAP) suffered major defeats in the recent Sabah election, adding pressure on the Prime Minister.

He said tensions within PH, including demands from DAP leaders for reforms and timelines, further complicate Anwar’s leadership.

“Running Malaysia is not easy. It’s like running a madhouse, not just a noisy fish market,” Minos said.
