HANOI, Vietnam: Vietnam will begin phasing out fossil-fuel motorbikes in Hanoi’s city centre from July 1, 2026, under a new directive to combat worsening pollution.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has instructed the Hanoi People’s Committee to ban petrol-powered motorbikes and mopeds within Ring Road 1 by mid-2026, expanding to Ring Road 2 by 2028, and Ring Road 3 by 2030.
The Vietnam News Agency said the move is part of a broader nationwide plan to address severe air and water pollution in major cities.
At times, Hanoi’s air quality has ranked among the worst globally.
The directive also calls for a low-emission zone plan by Q3 2025, a public awareness campaign, and upgraded public transport – prioritising electric buses, trains, and clean-energy infrastructure. – BERNAMA
