KUCHING: Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, drew warm crowds at the Sarawak Basic Needs Assistance (SKAS) walkabout and Live Run programme at H&L Supermarket, Eastern Mall, Siburan, today.
Shoppers, traders and families gathered as the Premier made his rounds through the supermarket, exchanging greetings, posing for photographs, and listening to the concerns of residents in a lively and cheerful atmosphere ahead of the Gawai celebration.
The Premier’s relaxed interaction with the crowd reflected the close rapport he shares with ordinary Sarawakians.
Speaking to reporters after the walkabout, Abang Johari said today (May 15) marked the second disbursement of the SKAS after the aid was first issued in March last year.
He said the value for households had now increased from RM950 to RM1,100 annually, with RM400 being distributed in the current phase while the remaining balance would be paid in November.
Under the revised rates, households receive RM1,100 yearly, senior citizens RM600 and single individuals RM375, with payments channelled in three phases through S Pay Global.
“We hope that with the added value that we provide, it can ease the burden on our people,” he said.
He noted that the May 15 disbursement date was chosen to help Dayak families prepare for Gawai celebrations.
Abang Johari also highlighted additional relief measures introduced by the state government, including a 25 per cent electricity bill discount for all domestic consumers from April to December 2026.
He further noted a 50 per cent rental reduction for hawkers, traders and small businesses operating in premises owned by local authorities and state statutory bodies.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian; Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Developmet, Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn; Deputy Minister for Transport, Datuk Dr Jerip Susil; Puncak Borneo Member of Parliament, Datuk Willie Mongin; Deputy Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development, Datuk Martin Ben; and State Secretary, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki; were also present during the walkabout and press conference.
