BETONG: Development in Betong Division is expected to accelerate further with strategic investments in infrastructure, agriculture, tourism, education and connectivity aimed at transforming the area into a more vibrant economic hub, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said Betong had undergone significant changes over the past five years through targeted development initiatives, with more projects in the pipeline to further strengthen the division’s economic and social growth.
“Betong has already changed its landscape, and I am confident it will continue to transform in the future, both from the perspective of economic and social development,” he told a press conference after launching the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Special Convention Betong Zone 2026 here today.
Abang Johari said the success achieved in Betong was driven by strategic development, particularly infrastructure improvements that had created greater opportunities for various economic sectors.
He highlighted the agriculture sector as one of the key growth areas, with the establishment of an Agro Park in the division and the adoption of technology to enhance agricultural production.
“Besides infrastructure, we are also looking at developments that can boost economic activities in this area, including agriculture, where we have established an Agro Park and are using technology to increase our agricultural output,” he said.
He added that tourism was another sector with strong potential, particularly with attractions such as Bukit Sadok, which carries its own historical significance.
Abang Johari said improved connectivity between Kuching and Betong, together with developments in Batang Ai, would further enhance the division’s tourism and economic prospects.
He noted that Batang Ai had already demonstrated its potential through the export of tilapia fish to Singapore, reflecting the success of efforts to develop new economic activities in the area.
“With closer connectivity through roads and the availability of a STOLport, where aircraft can transport cargo, including perishable goods, directly to markets, I believe this will further accelerate development here,” he said.
Meanwhile, Abang Johari said the state government would continue strengthening electricity infrastructure in Betong Division, with RM180 million allocated for upgrading works to meet increasing demand.
He said the allocation, which was initially RM150 million before an additional RM30 million was approved, would ensure improved electricity supply as rural communities continue to experience higher living standards.
“It will be connected from Samarahan to Betong, and the area will be bright and well-lit,” he said.
On education, Abang Johari stressed that strengthening knowledge and technology skills remained a key priority for Betong and the Central Zone.
He pointed to the newly opened Sarawak Science Centre as an important platform to create greater awareness and interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) among students.
He said the centre recorded 3,000 visitors within just two days of its opening, comprising mainly students from surrounding areas accompanied by their parents.
“The important thing is that parents are also coming with their children. This creates a feeling that we want to grow together. Based on the reports I received, parents were also explaining the exhibits to their children,” he said.
Abang Johari said the response reflected the objective of the facility, which was to create awareness and encourage greater interest in technology among the younger generation.
He also shared that principals from rural schools recently visited the centre to experience the practical application of what students learn in classrooms, with accommodation facilities provided nearby.
“This is very important. I hope awareness of technology will continue to increase for our future,” he said.
Earlier in his keynote address at the convention, Abang Johari said the government remained committed to continuing development in Betong, which has many areas with further growth potential.
He said the division’s transformation would continue through policies and initiatives aimed at ensuring balanced economic and social development for the people.
