KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has indicated that the state election is drawing nearer, as speculation grows over the timing of the polls ahead of the February constitutional deadline.
The Premier said the current state government term remains valid until then, but acknowledged that the timing of the election is approaching.
“I also do not know when the election will be, but what I do know is that our term (government) lasts until February. It is getting close, but I still do not know when the ‘drum will sound’,” he said.
He said this when speaking at the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Backbenchers Night held at Pullman Hotel here on Wednesday.

Although speculation has been growing over the timing of the polls, the Premier maintained that the exact date remains uncertain and has not been officially decided.
During his speech, he also took the opportunity to comment on the broader political climate in Malaysia, particularly in Peninsular Malaysia, which he said is currently marked by division.
He expressed concern that such political fragmentation could affect national stability and potentially create governance challenges if not managed carefully.
Against this backdrop, he urged leaders within Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) to remain focused and united in their efforts to govern the state effectively and continue prioritising the welfare of the people.
He emphasised that unity within the coalition is crucial in ensuring political stability in Sarawak amid an increasingly complex national political environment.
“That is why the GPS government is very important as a bulwark in defending Sarawak,” he said.
The Sarawak state election must be held before the expiry of the current state assembly term, with the final months of the term often seeing increased political activity and public speculation over potential polling dates.
Political observers have previously noted that while the election must be held within the constitutional timeframe, the exact timing remains at the discretion of the state leadership.
