KUCHING: Several locations in Sarawak have been identified as potential training centres under the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) to strengthen disaster preparedness and enhance public awareness.

The Chief Commissioner, Mohammad Abiddin Abdul Rahman, said the proposal is currently at the adjustment stage at the headquarters level, pending applications for funding.

“At headquarters level, we are in the process of refining applications to enable several areas to be identified as strategic training centres,” he said.

He added that the establishment of such centres aims to ensure the public is always prepared and understands the appropriate actions to take during emergencies or disasters.

“The purpose is to ensure society remains ready and aware of what needs to be done when facing emergency situations,” he said when met by reporters after officiating at the assembly, certificate presentation and rank alignment ceremony at the Pusat Pertahanan Awam Negeri Sarawak (PUSPA).

He stressed that community engagement and training remain among APM’s core functions, particularly in improving public response during crises.

The proposed training hubs are expected to complement ongoing efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness nationwide.
