KOTA SAMARAHAN: The public can still submit feedback on the Election Commission’s (EC) proposed redelineation of Sarawak state constituencies during its official display period.
Deputy Premier, who is also Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Deputy President, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas emphasised that the upcoming public display is specifically designed to allow voters and political parties to review and submit their views on the proposed boundaries.
“When the recommended areas are displayed by the Election Commission, there is room to present your views on what has been presented,” Uggah said when met after officiating the UNIMAS Digital Experience (DEX) Hub launch at PeTARY today (Aug 5).
His comments came following calls by Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Youth Chief Christopher Gira Sambang, who urged the EC to create a new state seat named Bukit Arip under the Selangau parliamentary constituency.
Gira cited Selangau’s vast expanse of over 9,000 square kilometres and its population of over 80,000 as justification for the additional seat, noting the area currently covers 750 longhouses split between Tamin and Kakus.
When asked about the proper channels for submitting formal objections, Uggah noted that feedback must be directed straight to the electoral body during the display period.
“I believe the Election Commission holds the authority. They provide the venue for the display, which is why the exhibition is conducted,” he added.
Addressing a recently leaked document detailing proposed name changes and new seats across 31 parliamentary constituencies, Uggah declined to comment on the specifics, stating he had not yet reviewed the media reports due to recent party convention duties.
The leaked document indicates proposed additions such as Bukit Arip in Selangau, as well as new seats in Mas Gading, Santubong, Petra Jaya, Stampin, Bandar Kuching, Kota Samarahan, Puncak Borneo and several other regions.
