KUCHING: Puncak Borneo Member of Parliament (MP), Datuk Willie Mongin, has voiced support for fair political competition while highlighting ongoing development efforts in the constituency.
Speaking on the current political landscape, he acknowledged the growing interest from multiple parties such as Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM), Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBDS), and Pakatan Harapan (PH).
He emphasised that such participation is a cornerstone of democracy.
“I was in the opposition before, and I don’t think we should stop them from participating or contesting as long as it is healthy competition.
“This is what makes a good democracy. Let the people be the judge,” he said during the press conference on the Brarak and Bipajak Gawai Bisegu at his service centre at Jalan Puncak Borneo here on Saturday (Apr 11).
At the same time, Willie highlighted the strong performance of the three Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) incumbent assemblymen representing state constituencies (Serembu, Mambong, Tarat) within Puncak Borneo.
According to him, all three have been actively identifying and implementing development projects aimed at improving infrastructure and boosting the local economy.
“They have worked very hard. There is an extensive list of projects funded under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP), state ministries, and the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA),” he noted, adding that the cumulative impact of these initiatives would significantly enhance living standards in the area once completed.
Willie also pointed to the close collaboration between himself and the state representatives, which has facilitated the rollout of several federal-funded projects.
Among these are the Phase 2 water supply project for Puncak Borneo, the construction of roads such as the route to Kampung Biya Jaber, and the planned upgrade of the road linking Kampung Annah Rais to Kampung Sadir.
Additionally, the proposed SMK Puncak Borneo has received approval and is currently at the land-siting stage, while the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) complex at Kampung Sapit has already been tendered to strengthen border management.
Further development efforts include flood mitigation projects under the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), as well as multiple rural road upgrades under ‘Kampung Jalan’ projects.
Despite these achievements, Willie acknowledged that more work remains to be done.
“We cannot deliver 100 per cent, but we are committed to continue bringing development, improving education, raising awareness, and strengthening basic infrastructure,” he said, adding that development efforts are now moving beyond basic needs toward broader socio-economic advancement.
He reiterated that continued cooperation and healthy political competition would ultimately serve the best interests of the people of Puncak Borneo.
