STOCKHOLM, Norway: Queen Sonja of Norway is celebrating her 89th birthday with her family during the traditional royal summer holidays, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.
The Norwegian royal court told the NTB news agency today that the special day would be celebrated in private.
Recently, Norwegians have been increasingly concerned about their queen’s health. As recently as the end of May, the wife of King Harald V was admitted to hospital due to heart problems. However, she has since resumed her engagements alongside her husband.
Despite their advanced age and health issues, the royal couple play a very active role in the royal family.
Many see the couple as a rock in the storm as the Norwegian royal family navigates a turbulent period.
Crown Princess Mette-Marit has only just undergone a lung transplant, their son Marius Borg Høiby was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment a few weeks ago, and the royal couple’s daughter drew criticism after allowing streaming service Netflix to accompany her wedding to a self-proclaimed shaman. – BERNAMA-dpa
