KUCHING: Rabies continues to pose a serious public health concern in Sarawak, which sees efforts by  the government to strengthen the state’s healthcare system, says Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

Dr Sim, who is also the Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government said that throughout the past year, a total of 106 vaccination, licensing, and microchip tagging programmes were conducted in collaboration with local authorities.

“These efforts have resulted in the issuance of 8,491 dog licenses and 3,901 microchips to enhance the control and monitoring of pets.

“We have also waived licensing fees, so there is no reason why Sarawakians should still be at risk of death from rabies,” he said.

He said this during the Appreciation Ceremony of the Ministry of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Sarawak (MPHLG), held at the Waterfront Hotel here yesterday.

Apart from healthcare, the state government, as emphasised by Dr Sim, also prioritises the provision of affordable housing for the people.

He said that since its introduction in 2022 until the end of 2024, the Housing Deposit and Repayment Assistance Scheme (HDRAS) has benefited 1,834 homeowners.

“Housing is not just a place of shelter but it is also the foundation for building a harmonious community.

“Therefore, the ministry is responsible for ensuring that housing developments are not only equipped with the necessary infrastructure but also contribute to the well-being of the people,” he added.

For the record, the ceremony was held to appreciate the dedication and commitment of the ministry’s staff over the past year.

Also present at the ceremony were MPHLG deputy ministers Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil and Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, MPHLG permanent secretary Datuk Elizabeth Loh, and other distinguished guests.
