SIMANGGANG: The Malaysian Red Crescent Society’s Sri Aman branch produced its first batch of 24 certified student first aiders during World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day celebrations on Friday (May 8).

The cadets, all Form Six students from SMK Sri Aman, received Basic First Aid and CPR certification during an assembly involving 105 Malaysian Red Crescent school cadets and junior members from participating schools.

Certificates were presented by branch chairperson Isaac Stalin Simon Japut, who said the initiative was part of efforts to encourage every secondary school cadet unit to establish its own trained first aider team.

He said certified cadets would be able to assist schools during sports events, co-curricular activities, and emergency situations.

Earlier, the branch carried out a humanitarian outreach visit to the maternity ward at Sri Aman Hospital, where gifts were distributed to newborn babies and patients admitted to the ward.

The annual visit forms part of the branch’s ongoing humanitarian outreach programme held in conjunction with World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.

The delegation also visited the hospital’s Pathology Unit, which will co-organise the divisional-level World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day celebration on June 14.

The delegation was welcomed by hospital director, Dr Hazwani Mohd Yusop and staff members.

World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is observed annually on May 8 to honour the humanitarian principles and services of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

The date commemorates the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the first Nobel Peace Prize recipient in 1901.
