SARIKEI: The river rehabilitation works at Sungai Padi along Jalan Sing Tung Kwong and Sungai Kelupu–Yi Jun at Mile 6.5 here have been completed, improving water flow and reducing the risk of river overflow in the affected areas.
The Sarawak Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities, Huang Tiong Sii, said the projects were part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen drainage systems, particularly in rural areas.
He said the rehabilitation works would help ensure smoother and more efficient water flow while minimising the risks of riverbank erosion and flooding that could threaten nearby communities.
“This step is important to ensure water flows more efficiently while reducing the risks of riverbank erosion and floods that may affect the safety of residents,” he said in a statement today.
Huang, who is the Member of Parliament for Sarikei and also Repok assemblyman, said a recent site inspection and verification of the completed works were carried out by representatives from the Sarikei Parliamentary Service Centre together with officers from the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID).
The inspection involved Wong Soon Mee from the parliamentary service centre and DID assistant engineer Angelia.
According to Huang, the Sungai Padi project focused at Jalan Sing Tung Kwong area, while the Sungai Kelupu–Yi Jun works covered Mile 6.5, which had been identified as needing drainage improvements.
“As the people’s representative, I am committed to ensuring every government project delivers a positive impact to the local community,” he said.
He added that the government would continue to implement river rehabilitation projects in stages, based on current needs, especially in rural areas within the Sarikei parliamentary constituency.
