LUNDU: Waste management efficiency in rural areas will be improved through the implementation of the Lundu District Council (MDL) Solid Waste Disposal site management project, valued at nearly RM17 million.
Opar state assemblyman, Billy Sujang, said the facility would provide a more modern, systematic and environmentally friendly sanitary landfill system and meet the needs of residents in Lundu, Bau and surrounding areas.
He said the need for a more modern waste disposal system was becoming increasingly urgent in line with population growth, residential development, increased commercial activity, and the expansion of the tourism sector in Lundu and Sematan.
“This project will not only resolve issues related to the capacity of the existing landfill, but also demonstrates the government’s commitment to maintaining cleanliness, public health, and environmental sustainability for the well-being of the people in the future,” he said.
He said this during the project handover ceremony held here on Thursday (June 25).
According to the project details, construction began on June 11, 2026 and is scheduled for completion on September 11, 2027.
The project is implemented with the MDL as the client while the Council Secretary serves as the Superintendent Officer.
The project scope includes preliminary works, site clearing and earthworks, construction of a sanitary landfill, leachate collection system, gas collection system, anaerobic pond, settling pond, infrastructure works, foundations and piling, internal road construction and drainage system.
Billy also reminded the contractor to ensure the project was carried out according to the specified requirements, schedule and standards so that it could be completed within the planned timeframe.
