KANOWIT: Construction has officially commenced on a new RM185.2-million water treatment plant here, aimed at drastically improving clean water coverage and meeting the area’s rapidly increasing demand.

The new facility will boast a capacity of 25 million litres per day (MLD), a massive upgrade from Kanowit’s current water treatment plant which only yields 4.86 MLD.

Utility and Telecommunication Minister, Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, stated that the project underscores the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government’s continuous commitment to reinforcing the region’s water supply infrastructure.

“The construction of the 25-MLD water plant is highly timely to strengthen the water supply in the Kanowit area, fulfilling the growing demand for treated and clean water,” he said in his Facebook post today.

During the site visit, Julaihi noted that the construction progress is currently running smoothly.

Once completed, the plant will significantly expand the coverage of treated water to residents across Kanowit and its surrounding vicinity.

Also present during the working visit were Machan assemblyman, Allan Siden Gramong; Ngemah assemblyman; Anyi Jana; Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication’s (MUT) Permanent Secretary, Datuk Jafri Lias; and Rural Water Supply Department’s (JBALB) Acting Director, Tamida Da’adi.

They were joined by senior engineers and officers from both MUT and JBALB, alongside local community leaders (KMKK) from around the Kanowit district.
