KUCHING: A drainage upgrade project under the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA) has been successfully completed in Kampung Seberang Buso in Bau near here.
Spearheaded by Deputy Minister for Transport (Riverine and Marine) Datuk Henry Harry Jinep, the RM200,000-project was implemented over a six-month period and is expected to significantly improve the efficiency of the village’s drainage system.
According to Henry, the initiative was undertaken to address longstanding issues faced by residents, particularly stagnant water caused by poor drainage flow, which often resulted in unpleasant odours and increased risk of flash floods during heavy rainfall.
“The previous drainage system was unable to cope with water flow, leading to stagnant water and discomfort for residents. With this upgrade, we aim to ensure smoother water movement and a cleaner environment,” the Tasik Biru assemblyman said.
The scope of works included the construction of new drains as well as the upgrading of existing drainage infrastructure to enhance overall capacity and functionality.
Although the project directly benefits six households, the project’s positive impact extends beyond immediate recipients by improving overall sanitation and reducing health risks within the surrounding area.
Residents have expressed appreciation for the completed works, highlighting improved living conditions and peace of mind, particularly during rainy seasons.
The project reflects the government’s continued commitment to addressing grassroots infrastructure needs, especially in rural areas, to enhance quality of life.
Henry added that similar initiatives will continue to be prioritised to ensure that development reaches all communities, in line with the state’s broader agenda of inclusive and sustainable development.
“This is part of our ongoing effort to provide practical solutions to everyday challenges faced by the people.
“We will continue to do community based project provided the people willing to allow us access into their land, especially along the backyards and surrounding areas.”
