SIMUNJAN: Land acquisition issues involving the RM226.7 million Gedong-Simunjan Road upgrading project were discussed during a dialogue session held at the district office here on Thursday (May 7).

The session, chaired by Simunjan assemblyman Awla Dris, brought together representatives from the Land and Survey Department, the Sarawak Public Works Department (PWD), contractors and affected landowners to address matters related to the implementation of the Gedong-Simunjan Road (Section B) project.

Awla said the dialogue was important to ensure issues involving land acquisition and boundary alignments could be resolved systematically while safeguarding the interests and welfare of residents affected by the project.

“The government remains committed to ensuring development projects are implemented smoothly without neglecting the welfare and rights of the people involved,” he said after chairing the session.

He said the road upgrading project is expected to significantly improve accessibility, connectivity and road safety for residents in the Simunjan area.

According to him, the project would also serve as a catalyst for economic and social growth by strengthening transportation links and improving mobility for surrounding communities.

Discussions during the session focused on land acquisition matters, coordination of project implementation and measures to ensure construction works proceed according to schedule.

The Gedong-Simunjan Road (Section B) project is being carried out through a design-and-build approach involving the construction of a new 5.88-kilometre road based on JKR R3 standards with four dual-carriageway lanes.

The scope of works also includes the construction of two reinforced concrete bridges across Sungai Simunjan and Sungai Ngeli, drainage works, street lighting installation, traffic management and utility relocation and protection works.

The project carries a contract period of 36 months from Dec 22, 2025 until Dec 21, 2028.

Residents attending the session were also given the opportunity to voice concerns, raise questions and submit suggestions regarding land-related matters at the project site to help facilitate mutual understanding and smoother implementation of the project.
