BAU: A new community-based eco-tourism project worth RM500,000 is set to transform Kampung Tringgus into a nature destination, complementing its growing reputation as a coffee farming village.
Serembu assemblyman Datuk Miro Simuh said the allocation, funded by the Sarawak government through the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA), will be used to develop a trekking route, gazebo and camping facilities at a scenic waterfall in Kampung Tringgus, Krokong.
He said preliminary works, including the trail design, have been completed, with implementation targeted within the year.
“The trekking route design is ready. From the village, visitors can reach the waterfall in about 30 minutes on foot.”
According to Miro, the project is designed to encourage visitors who come to experience Tringgus’ community coffee farms to extend their stay by enjoying the area’s pristine rainforest and waterfall.
He described Tringgus as the last settlement in Krokong before the Bengoh Range, where three villages — Kampung Tringgus Bong, Kampung Tringgus Rabak Rotan and Kampung Tringgus Matan Nguan — are clustered within the same locality.
A crystal-clear river flows through the heart of the villages, while the surrounding forests, tagang fish conservation area and coffee plantations offer strong potential for eco-tourism, he added.
“My vision is to develop these three villages into eco-villages. They have a beautiful ecosystem, with coffee farms, waterfalls and nature that can become attractions for visitors.”
Miro said the villages already possess essential infrastructure, including electricity, treated water, community halls, a shared church, a futsal court, a primary school and a KEMAS kindergarten, making them well-prepared to receive visitors.
He noted that Tringgus had undergone significant progress over the years through continuous rural development initiatives.
“Previously, the village was quite backward. We invested substantially to improve infrastructure and change the community’s mindset. Today, it is a well-developed village that has produced many graduates.”
The tourism initiative forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen community entrepreneurship while supporting the village’s pilot coffee industry, which has emerged as a new source of rural income.
Miro said integrating agriculture with eco-tourism would create additional economic opportunities for local residents and contribute to long-term poverty eradication in the Serembu constituency through sustainable, community-led tourism.
