SIBU: A total of RM700,000 has been allocated for the renovation and improvement of two longhouses, namely Rumah Sebastian Juntan and Rumah Henry Nor.
Deputy Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee highlighted that Rumah Sebastian Juntan, which has stood for over a century, has been given priority in the upcoming repair and upgrade works because of its distinct historical significance.
He added that the longhouse is not only an important cultural landmark for the local community but also holds a special place in history, having once hosted a visit from the Sultan of Terengganu.
“Our main focus is the repair of the ruai (the communal veranda), as it is the most important space that forms the heart of community activities, especially for ceremonies and festivals,” he said during his working site visit in the area today (Feb 11).
He added that RM250,000 has been specifically allocated for repairing the ruai of Rumah Sebastian, while another RM240,000 will be used to upgrade the residential units in the longhouse.
Meanwhile, Rumah Henry Nor will receive RM200,000 to carry out improvement works.
Annuar, who is also Nangka state assemblyman, said the allocation is being channeled through the Small Rural Project (MRP) and the Rural Transformation Project (RTP).
He also said that contractors have been instructed to expedite the project implementation so that the upgrades can be completed before this year’s Gawai celebration.
“Our priority is to ensure that residents can enjoy a higher level of comfort, especially during festive seasons.
“For the Iban community, the ruai plays a vital role and is actively used throughout Gawai for various gatherings and traditional ceremonies,” he said.
In a related development, he said RM70,000 has been used to upgrade the drainage system, while another RM130,000 will be utilised for roof repairs and ruai upgrades at Rumah Henry Nor.
