KUCHING: Forty-two new and experienced e-hailing drivers gained essential road safety knowledge during a Road Safety Seminar held at WJ Wego Driving School today (Feb 16).

Organised by Maxim Kuching in collaboration with the Sarawak Road Transport Department (RTD), the first-ever seminar aimed to equip e-hailing drivers with critical knowledge on road safety regulations, customer service, legal requirements, and the e-hailing industry.

Maxim Kuching initiated the programme to enhance road safety awareness and responsibility among drivers, ensuring they are well-prepared for challenges on the road.

Participants were taught on handling emergencies, interpreting road signs, switching lanes safely, utilising technology effectively, and complying with the law. The interactive session also allowed them to share driving experiences and seek clarifications on road-related matters.

In addition to the seminar, new drivers also attended public service vehicle (PSV) classes to obtain their e-hailing licenses.

Sarawak RTD Road Safety and Corporate Unit assistant administrative officer Muhai Mohamed said that it is important to be well-versed in road safety, particularly for e-hailing drivers who spend most of their time on the road.

“Understanding and following safety rules as well as emergency procedures are crucial. As e-hailing drivers, they can be the ones to save a life or, unfortunately, end up in an accident.

“Proper road safety education not only enhances knowledge but also saves lives. Key factors include adhering to traffic rules, maintaining vehicles, driving cautiously in adverse weather, and using technology wisely,” she said.

Meanwhile, Maxim Kuching head Kenny Carlson echoed similar sentiments and stressed such programmes are crucial in promoting road safety awareness.

“This programme plays a vital role in raising awareness, especially among e-hailing drivers. A special thanks to our Maxim Kuching drivers for their dedication to following traffic regulations and prioritising safety.

“We hope this initiative has a positive impact on them and helps reduce road accidents,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to the RTD and the driving institute for their collaboration and reaffirmed Maxim’s commitment to working with authorities to improve road safety.
