KUCHING: The first phase of a Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) project to build a covered open school hall at SK Sungai Stutong BDC has been completed, with plans already underway to finish the facility under a second phase next year.

Kota Sentosa assemblyman, Wilfred Yap Sau Sin, witnessed the official handover of Phase 1 works by the Public Works Department (JKR), the implementing agency, at the school on Monday.

The RM200,000 project involved the partial construction of the open hall at an existing court site, delivering about half of the intended structure.

Despite its incomplete state, the facility is already being used to provide a safer and more conducive space for student activities.

Yap said the project marked a meaningful step forward but acknowledged that more work was needed to realise the full vision of a completely open hall.

“Given the limited RTP funds available, I have to carefully prioritise and allocate resources across various urgent needs in the constituency to ensure that all communities benefit fairly,” he explained.

He added that he remained committed to completing the project and had requested JKR to urgently prepare the scope of works and Bill of Quantities (BQ) for Phase 2.

The second phase, to be funded under an RM300,000 RTP allocation for 2026, will focus on completing the hall, including the construction of a stage and other essential facilities.

Yap also called on JKR to expedite the preparation of drawings and documentation, with a target to finalise them by the end of April this year to ensure timely implementation, reaffirming his approach to resource allocation.

“The completion of this hall is not just about infrastructure, it is about investing in our children, our schools, and our future,” he said.
