MERADONG: A total of 25 road and bridge upgrading projects have been approved here under the 2026 Malaysian Road Records Information System (MARRIS) programme, boosting efforts to improve connectivity and infrastructure in rural areas.
Meradong assemblyman, Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing, said the projects would focus on upgrading ageing roads and bridges in several villages and longhouses across the constituency to provide safer and more comfortable access for residents.
He said the initiative reflects the Sarawak Government’s continued commitment to strengthening rural infrastructure and ensuring development reaches communities outside urban centres.
“The implementation of these projects is important to ensure rural residents continue to enjoy better, safer and higher-quality infrastructure facilities,” he said during a site visit to inspect several roads and bridges identified for upgrading on Thursday (May 7).
The inspection, conducted together with officers from the Meradong and Julau District Council, also allowed authorities to assess the condition of deteriorating infrastructure and obtain feedback from residents on urgent needs in their areas.
Ding expressed hope that the projects would not only improve accessibility for residents but also contribute to the socio-economic development of rural communities in Meradong.
He added that the projects are part of ongoing efforts by the Sarawak Government to deliver more inclusive and high-impact infrastructure development for the wellbeing of the people.
