SADONG JAYA: The Sadong Jaya and Asajaya areas are expected to experience rapid coastal development transformation through the implementation of various infrastructure and strategic projects under Sarawak’s regional development agenda.

Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Aidel Lariwoo said the areas hold strong potential to emerge as a new economic hub, particularly in the port, logistics and downstream industrial sectors.

He said Sadong Jaya’s strategic location near the estuaries of Batang Sadong and Batang Lupar also makes it one of the largest terubuk fish landing centres in Sarawak.

“Terubuk fish is part of the traditional identity of the coastal communities in this area and carries significant economic value involving fishermen, traders, downstream product entrepreneurs as well as the tourism sector,” he said in an UKAS report during the closing ceremony of the Pesta Terubuk 2026 held here recently.

Aidel added that Sadong Jaya is currently included in the strategic development planning under the Integrated Regional Samarahan Development Agency (IRSDA), which adopts a “bottom-up” development approach based on the needs of the people.

According to him, the approach allows project proposals to be identified directly by the community through the Village Development and Security Committees (JKKK), community leaders and local agencies before being implemented by the government.

He also said that each regional development agency in Sarawak has been allocated up to RM1.5 billion to implement various development and infrastructure projects that directly benefit the people.

Mega projects, he said, including coastal bridge networks such as the Batang Sadong Bridge and Batang Lupar Bridge, have successfully transformed the socio-economic landscape of rural communities by improving connectivity and shortening travel time.

Meanwhile, he said the Samarahan coastal area also has the potential to benefit from future developments, including proposed deep-sea port projects and facilities related to Sarawak’s oil and gas industry.
