SERIAN: Greater emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education can help the Dayak community produce future professionals and experts in strategic sectors.

Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn stressed that the Dayak community must improve its level of education and skills to compete in various professional and technical sectors.

He said this is crucial in producing a high-income community and skilled experts capable of contributing to Sarawak’s development.

“STEM remains the most important stream to enable our children to pursue higher education and obtain good incomes,” he said when speaking at the Pre-Gawai celebration organised by the Serian Division Community Leaders and Village Chiefs Association (PKMKK) here on Monday (May 25).

Sagah added that education is the key to transforming the living standards of rural communities and ensuring that the younger Dayak generation can become professionals and experts in strategic fields.

He also emphasised that Sarawak should not continue relying on foreign workers.

“Instead, locals should seize opportunities to become skilled workers and experts in high-technology industries,” he added.

He also expressed hope that the Bidayuh community would also achieve major success in the fields of technology and aerospace in the future, including producing individuals capable of developing their own satellites, similar to Malaysians who had previously undergone training in the United States.

In addition, he encouraged youths to take advantage of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as well as the implementation of the Dual Language Programme (DLP) to strengthen English proficiency and technical skills.

He said mastery of knowledge, technology and professional skills is vital to ensure the Dayak community continues to progress and becomes part of the nation-building agenda and Sarawak’s future development.
