SIBURAN: Rivers are not just sources of water but the lifelines for rural communities that must be preserved collectively by all levels of society.

Having said this, Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister, Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, said rivers in Sarawak will continue to be central to the history, economy and culture of rural communities, even as the state advances into an era of development.

“Rivers are more than just water sources – they have been the heart of life, transportation, livelihood, and cultural heritage of our communities since the time of our ancestors.

“We can no longer rely solely on government agencies, which is why I urge every individual, family, and organisation to play their part in keeping our rivers clean,” he said when officiating the Village River Cleanliness and Landscaping Competition here recently.

The competition was held in conjunction with the state-level World Rivers Day 2025 celebration recently and Sagah described it as a great honour for Tarat constituency to host the event.

The competition’s top prize went to the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) of Kampung Stabut, followed by JKKK Kampung Simpok in second place, and JKKK Kampung Senah Rayang in third.

A special award was also presented to JKKK Kampung Pesang in recognition of their continuous efforts in preserving river cleanliness and village landscaping.
