BANGKOK: Sarawak has reinforced its position as a regional energy leader after Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg outlined the state’s low-carbon agenda and ASEAN Power Grid ambitions during a closed-door Ministerial Roundtable at Gastech 2026 today.
Held at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre (BITEC), the high-level session brought together about 30 ministers and senior energy leaders from around the world, alongside chief executives of leading oil and gas companies.
Abang Johari said he emphasised Sarawak’s strategic role in advancing the ASEAN Power Grid and the state’s commitment to developing sustainable energy in response to climate change.
“Sarawak will continue pursuing a low-carbon, decarbonisation agenda while strengthening efforts to share clean energy with neighbouring ASEAN countries through regional power connectivity,” he said to reporters after the meeting.
According to the Premier, the proposals received encouraging feedback from participants, particularly representatives from Thailand and several African nations, reflecting growing international interest in Sarawak’s energy transition model.
He described the roundtable as an important platform for exchanging ideas on the future of regional energy development, with discussions focusing on balancing energy security, economic growth and climate responsibilities.
Abang Johari added that his engagements with Gastech organisers also provided valuable insights into global energy trends and investment opportunities that could further support Sarawak’s long-term economic direction.
“The discussions helped align Sarawak’s aspirations with those of its ASEAN partners, particularly in accelerating cross-border energy collaboration and expanding the region’s low-carbon energy ecosystem,” he said.
The Ministerial Roundtable was one of Gastech 2026’s key closed-door engagements, gathering policymakers and industry leaders to deliberate on strategies shaping the future of global and ASEAN energy development amid the transition towards cleaner energy sources.
Gastech 2026, now in its 54th edition, is the world’s leading exhibition and conference for natural gas, liquefied natural gas (LNG), hydrogen, climate technologies and artificial intelligence in energy.
