KUCHING: In a major step toward improving cross-border transport and connectivity, Sarawak and Brunei have agreed to bolster collaboration in the transport sector following a high-level bilateral meeting during Sarawak Minister for Transport, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin’s official visit to Brunei.

The two-day visit, held from August 25 to 26, included key discussions aimed at enhancing cooperation in land, maritime, and aviation connectivity.

Lee, accompanied by a delegation from Sarawak, met with Brunei Darussalam’s Minister of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC), Pengiran Datuk Seri Setia Shamhary Pengiran Datuk Paduka Mustapha, in a courtesy call before moving into the formal bilateral talks.

The meeting was co-chaired by MTIC Permanent Secretary, Mohammad Nazri Mohammad Yusof, and Lee.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed a wide range of topics, from road connectivity projects to the digitalisation of border processes.

Notably, Brunei Darussalam presented its Economic Master Plan, which includes measures to improve cross-border connectivity.

The Sarawak delegation outlined ongoing initiatives, such as the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS), road development projects, the upgrading of the Sungai Tujoh CIQS Complex in Miri, and the feasibility study for the TransBorneo Railway.

“For many of our people, crossing the border is part of daily life whether for work, education, visiting family and friends, or tourism.

“It is therefore crucial that we continue to enhance connectivity, improve efficiency at our border posts, and expand cooperation in transport, logistics, and aviation,” said Lee, who stressed the importance of seamless cross-border movement in his remarks.

The discussions also centred on the improvements to Integrated Customs Quarantine and Security (ICQS) border posts in places like Sungai Tujoh Miri, Limbang, and Lawas, and how these upgrades could streamline the cross-border processes, including emergency flight landings.

“Digitalisation efforts were also highlighted to make permit applications easier, harmonise vehicle regulations, and extend operating hours at border posts,” he said.

The meeting concluded positively, with both nations agreeing to hold these bilateral discussions annually, with each country taking turns hosting.

Lee also emphasised on the potential for greater cooperation in the tourism, aviation and maritime sectors, all of which are crucial to future economic growth.

The official visit saw engagements with several industry stakeholders, including Royal Brunei Airlines, Gallop Air, Warisan Shipping Line, and Muara Port Company Sdn Bhd.

These discussions were aimed at exploring new opportunities for collaboration in transport and logistics.
