KUCHING: The Sarawak Arts Council (MSS) office, which is currently at Rumah Sarawak, will undergo renovation, and the council is expected to operate as usual at a temporary office.

Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the proposal received positive feedback from Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for the renovation work to be done on Rumah Sarawak.

“For the media’s information, Rumah Sarawak, which also used to be the Chief Minister’s official residence and now MSS headquarters, will undergo renovation.

“The council will operate as usual at a temporary location while the renovation is underway. It is also a heritage building known in Sarawak,” he said in his speech at the ‘Majlis Seni Sarawak Bersama Media’ programme at the Theatre Hotel last night (Tuesday, June 30).

In the meantime, the ministry has identified a temporary office to enable the council to continue its operations until the renovation work is completed.

“Although the permanent office is still being renovated, it does not mean development programmes, training, singing classes, and other activities should stop.

“We have identified a suitable temporary location under my ministry and are just waiting for the necessary approval,” said Abdul Karim.

He reiterated that the MSS headquarters reflects the Sarawak Government’s commitment to strengthening the state’s arts and cultural sector.

He also revealed that preparations are underway for the upcoming Sarawak Performing Arts Centre, including plans to establish a dedicated management structure to oversee performances and activities once the facility is operational.

“We want performances to be held regularly, whether weekly or monthly, and proper planning is needed to ensure the centre reaches its full potential,” he said.
