KUCHING: The Sarawak Government is intensifying efforts to increase paddy production through modern technology and research into new seed varieties as part of its long-term food security strategy.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Abdul Rahman Johari Tun Openg said various initiatives were being implemented, including the use of modern farming equipment such as mini tractors and mini harvesters to improve local rice production.
“We are trying to cultivate padi using modern methods and machinery such as tractors, mini harvesters and other modern equipment to increase yield,” he said during the GPS Backbenchers Night held at Pullman Hotel on Wednesday (May 20).
He said food security is a critical issue that must be safeguarded, especially amid growing global uncertainties, climate change and disruptions affecting international food supply chains, making it necessary for Sarawak to strengthen its own food production capacity.
Furthermore, he said that the research on new paddy seed varieties was also underway to improve production and address climate-related challenges affecting food supply.
According to him, trials of new seed varieties were underway in several areas to assess their effectiveness and suitability.
“There are private parties currently conducting trials. Whether they succeed or not, they are making efforts to improve paddy cultivation,” he said.
He added that further collaboration involving external expertise and research institutions, including Yunnan University, could be explored if the trials proved successful.
Abang Johari said the overall effort was part of Sarawak’s long-term strategy to strengthen the state’s food security, reduce dependence on imported food, and ensure stable food availability in the future.
