SINGAPORE: Sarawak is poised to make history as a global pioneer by exploring the world’s first technology that converts processed seawater into a key platform for carbon trading activities.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg revealed that the latest initiative stemmed from strategic discussions with Singapore during his working visit to the republic.

“We have discussed (with Singapore) how seawater can be processed and become the foundation for carbon trading.

“This is a new technology, and if it materialises, it will be the first technology in the world where saltwater can be purified and transformed into a platform for carbon trading,” he said in a news report by TVS during a press conference at the Sands Expo & Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands, yesterday (May 18).

Following the development, Abang Johari said he had instructed the Sarawak Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability (MEESty) to work closely with Singaporean technology partners to further refine the implementation of the innovation.

Earlier on Monday morning, Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari also took time to have breakfast with Singapore’s Minister for Manpower, Dr Tan See Leng.

The meeting provided an opportunity for both leaders to exchange views on various matters aimed at strengthening strategic cooperation between the two sides.

After that, the Sarawak Premier held two high-profile meetings with representatives from Temasek and Equatic Inc.

The Temasek delegation was led by its chief executive officer, Dilhan Pillay Sandrasegara, alongside the company’s senior leadership team, while Equatic Inc was represented by its founder and chief technology officer, Gaurav Sant, and board member Ryan Tan.

He later had lunch with Temasek Trust chief executive officer Desmond Kuek and the company’s senior leadership team.

Commenting on the invitation extended by Singapore under Temasek Holdings, Abang Johari described it as a clear signal that Sarawak’s new economic strategies and green agenda are on the right track and attracting international attention.

He said the panel members and Temasek’s strategic partners expressed strong interest in understanding and learning from Sarawak’s approach, particularly in balancing rapid economic development with environmental sustainability.

“This is a very complex matter, and they have acknowledged that Sarawak has managed to fulfil its responsibility in ensuring balanced development alongside environmental sustainability.

“So, this is a positive image for Sarawak with the implementation of our new policies,” he said.
