KUCHING: The Sarawak Heart Centre has successfully performed Borneo’s first-ever Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve Implantation (TPVI), becoming the second Ministry of Health (MoH) hospital in Malaysia to offer the highly specialised procedure.

According to a post on the Sarawak Heart Centre’s Facebook page, the milestone marks a significant step in bringing advanced structural heart interventions closer to patients in East Malaysia.

The breakthrough was achieved through a collaboration between the expert team from Hospital Serdang and the multidisciplinary team at Sarawak Heart Centre.

“Together, this collaboration demonstrates the strength of knowledge sharing, teamwork, and the Ministry of Health’s commitment to expanding advanced cardiac services across the country.

“The successful introduction of TPVI reflects the dedication and expertise of paediatric cardiologists, anaesthesiologists, nurses, radiographers, and all supporting staff who worked tirelessly to make this possible,” it said yesterday (Jul 16).

The centre said the introduction of TPVI provides patients requiring pulmonary valve replacement with a less invasive treatment option, offering the potential for faster recovery, shorter hospital stays and improved quality of life.

It added that the achievement reinforces the centre’s commitment to expanding access to advanced cardiovascular care, embracing innovation and continuously enhancing healthcare services for the people of Sarawak and beyond.

The centre also extended its appreciation and congratulations to its entire team for the remarkable achievement.
