KUCHING: The zakat fitrah rate in Sarawak for the year 2026/1447H has been maintained at RM7.50 per person, the same as last year.
Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, Kuching North City Commission and Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said that the giving of zakat purifies the soul and wealth as it ensures the welfare of the marginalized is continuously taken care of.
“Zakat ensures the welfare of the asnaf (those eligible to receive zakat) and others in need is safeguarded, allowing them to celebrate Aidilfitri more fully.
“Therefore, Muslims are urged to fulfill their obligations diligently,” he said when officiating the Sarawak Islamic Council Contributions to Mosques, Surau and Islamic Burial Grounds presentation ceremony at Dewan Kompleks Islam Sarawak yesterday (Feb 4).
He also reminded that members of the public wishing to pay zakat should do so through the proper channels.
“Fitrah zakat payments must be made via channels that are legitimate and recognised by the Sarawak Islamic Council (SIC),” he pointed out.
Meanwhile, Muslims in Malaysia are expected to begin fasting for Ramadan on February 18 (Wednesday).
