KUCHING: Sarawak may seek assistance from landslide experts in Kuala Lumpur to help locate the missing victim of the Kampung Lereng Bukit landslide in Miri.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said search and rescue (SAR) efforts are ongoing to recover the victim, who remains buried under the rubble.
“Authorities are still searching for the victim. If necessary, we will reach out to experts from Kuala Lumpur.
“On behalf of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government, I extend my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the disaster,” he said when met at the Sarawak-level Chinese New Year Open House at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today (Jan 29).
The landslide, which struck two houses early this morning, buried five victims.
As of noon, only one person remains missing and she has been identified as 71-year-old Fatimah Dawi.
The first body, a 16-year-old boy, was recovered at around 6am. At 10.40am, rescuers found the second victim, a 41-year-old woman, buried under the rubble.
At 11.30am, the third victim, an eight-year-old girl, was located. Just 10 minutes later, at 11.40am, they found an 11-year-old girl nearby. Both girls were found close to the second victim.
