KUCHING: Sarawak is considering bringing forward its planned cloud seeding operation as worsening haze pushed Air Pollutant Index (API) readings above 300 in parts of the state.
Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh said the proposal to bring forward the operation, initially scheduled for Sept 3 to 5, was still under consideration, with authorities continuing to monitor the severity and expected duration of the haze before making a decision.
“If we look at the API readings, they have increased. We pray that this situation will not continue for long and that the source of the problem in West Kalimantan can be resolved,” he said when met by reporters at Dewan Pertubuhan Anak Seni Bandarsah Kuching here today (Aug 30).
He urged the public to reduce outdoor activities, wear face masks and avoid open burning, particularly with API readings having risen above 300.
He said the situation in Sarawak remained under control, but efforts must continue to prevent the air quality from deteriorating further.
On the planned cloud seeding operation, he said the authorities are still assessing the impact and possible duration of the haze before determining the best action to mitigate the situation.
He said cloud seeding would not only help reduce the haze but could also increase water levels in dams and other water sources. However, Len Talif stressed that Sarawak’s water supply remained under control.
Asked how long the haze could persist, Len Talif said the matter is best addressed by the Meteorological Department, although early reports indicated that the situation could potentially continue until December, with rainfall expected from time to time.
Meanwhile, he said Sarawak is engaging with Indonesia, particularly West Kalimantan, while discussions are also taking place at the federal level on possible assistance to help ease the situation.
He added that Sarawak remained open to extending assistance according to its capacity if requested.
Len Talif also urged children, senior citizens and other high risk groups to take extra precautions by wearing face masks and reducing outdoor activities.
