DUBLIN: The Sarawak government is planning to develop an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Data Campus in Kuching as a catalyst for an AI grid, aimed at attracting investment and strengthening the state’s data centre ecosystem.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said a 405-hectare (about 1,000-acre) site has been identified in Tanjung Embang, Kuching to realise the high-impact project.
According to him, the facility, to be known as the Kuching AI Data Campus, will be equipped with dedicated power and water supply infrastructure to support data centre operations and the development of AI system connectivity nodes towards establishing an AI grid in the future.
“The project will be implemented through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), beginning with the first phase covering 120 hectares,” he said in an UKAS report.
Earlier, Abang Johari visited the K2 Strategic Data Centre Campus here yesterday (May 2 local time).

He added that the development of the campus will be modelled after the world-class facility he visited.
Abang Johari said that the initiative will also support large-scale development plans in Tanjung Embang, including the construction of a new airport, seaport and low-carbon industrial developments.
During the visit, he was also briefed by K2 Strategic founder and chief executive officer as well as managing director Kuok Meng Wei, and chief operating officer and executive director Kuan Zhan Peng, before touring the facilities.
