THE Sarawak Ports Authority is expected to start full operations by the second quarter of 2026, consolidating all existing port authorities in the state under a single regulatory body.
Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Majang Renggi said the consolidation is being carried out under the Sarawak Ports Authority Ordinance 2024, with a task force established by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development to prepare the necessary administrative and management framework.
“The Sarawak Ports Authority will streamline port operations across the state, ensuring regulatory oversight is unified and more efficient,” he said in response to a question from Datuk Paulus Palu Gumbang (GPS-Batu Danau) during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today.
Majang said the consolidation process will be implemented in three phases: an interim phase, an incorporation phase, and a privatisation phase.
During the interim phase, regulatory control will be transferred from existing port authorities to SPA.
“The incorporation phase will see the transformation of port authorities into fully government-owned companies to allow market-based management while emphasising efficiency, financial strength, and accountability.
“The final phase will prepare the entities for potential privatisation in the future,” he said.
On the staff, Majang assured that employees of existing port authorities would be offered positions either in SPA or in the newly corporatised port entities based on the principle of “no less favourable”, ensuring a smooth transition without disadvantaging the workforce.
“The Sarawak Ports Authority is a key step towards modernising port operations in Sarawak and enhancing the state’s logistical efficiency,” he added.
