KUCHING: The Sarawak Public Works Department (PWD) has allowed project activities in Serian to continue with strict health precautions, following an earlier notice suspending construction works amid the hazardous haze.

In its latest notice today (Sept 5), PWD Sarawak said activities at project sites under its supervision could proceed in accordance with preventive and health measures.

The department said the decision referred to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) statement issued today (Sept 5) on the haze situation in Serian.

SDMC had said government and private offices, industries, plantations, construction sites and other workplaces in the affected area could continue operating, provided necessary precautionary measures were taken.

Earlier, Sarawak PWD had instructed that all construction works for its projects in areas declared as emergency haze zones be temporarily suspended for the duration of the declaration.

Contractors, consultants and workers have now been urged to remain alert to the prevailing haze conditions and prioritise their safety and health throughout project implementation.

As of 10 am on Friday (Sept 4), Serian recorded an Air Pollutant Index reading of 334, placing the area under the hazardous category.
