BETONG: The construction of the Sarawak Second Trunk Road (STRR) under Package B4 connecting the proposed Batang Lupar Bridge No. 2 in Sri Aman to the Betong interchange at the Pan Borneo Highway has achieved 76.68 per cent physical completion.

Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Aidel Lariwoo said the RM292.06 million project, implemented by the Public Works Department (PWD) Sarawak, is being carried out over a 42-month construction period and is expected to be opened in stages to road users beginning August 2026.

He also said the project was crucial in strengthening connectivity between Sri Aman and Betong while improving accessibility for residents in surrounding areas.

“This project is very important in enhancing connectivity in this area. Therefore, the commitment of all parties, including the contractor, is essential to ensure it can be completed according to schedule,” he said during a working visit to the site on Wednesday (May 6) as reported by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).

Aidel said the project scope involves the construction of a 27.84-kilometre dual carriageway and the upgrading of the road standard from JKR R3 to R5.

He said it also includes the construction of two triple-span bridges, utility relocation works, development of new infrastructure, civil works, installation of street lighting, road markings and signboards.

“Once completed, the project is expected to greatly benefit local residents by providing smoother and more comfortable travel while shortening travel time between Sri Aman and Betong.

“The road construction will also improve access to longhouses and villages along Jalan Lidong, thereby stimulating economic growth and improving the living standards of rural communities,” he said.

With encouraging progress and continuous monitoring by the relevant authorities, Aidel expressed confidence that the project is on track for completion according to schedule.

Also present were Betong MP Datuk Dr Richard Rapu, Engkilili assemblyman Dr Johnical Rayong Ngipa, Betong Resident Datuk Richard Michael Abunawas, PWD Betong divisional engineer Jason Ng Boon Tuan and Verde FM Sdn Bhd Group managing drector Datuk Franky Chua.
