BINTULU: Sarawak is studying the feasibility of developing a railway system connecting Bintulu to Samalaju as part of the state’s long-term infrastructure and industrial expansion plans.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the proposed railway network would support Bintulu’s growing role as a globally recognised industrial hub.

He said the proposal is part of a broader strategy to modernise Sarawak’s transportation system while supporting industrial growth in the region.

“We are now conducting studies to establish a railway line from Bintulu to Samalaju,” he said during the ‘Makan Malam Bersama Pemimpin Masyarakat’ event at Hotel Imperial Bintulu on Friday night (May 22).

Abang Johari said discussions on the proposal have already been communicated to the federal government.

He stressed that the railway proposal was not merely an ambitious idea but part of a structured development plan aligned with Sarawak’s future economic direction.

“Bintulu is now recognised globally through the World Economic Forum as a sustainable city with digital-driven development. The improved infrastructure connectivity would further strengthen Bintulu’s competitiveness as an industrial and investment destination,” he said.

At the same time, Abang Johari pointed out that Bintulu’s development did not happen by chance but through careful planning that takes into account future global economic demands.

He also said Bintulu’s development success was made possible due to political stability, cooperation and unity among its people.

“If the people of Bintulu are not united, it will be difficult for us to develop Bintulu into an area recognised by the world,” he added.
