KUCHING: Two Sarawak Tribune reporters were honoured at the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) Appreciation and Excellence Service Awards ceremony last night, receiving the prestigious SFC Media Appreciation Award.

Digital chief reporter Sarah Hafizah Chandra took home the News Reporting Award – English for her special report highlighting the natural wonders of Mulu. She received RM1,500 and a trophy for her winning entry.

Sarah is an accomplished journalist with multiple accolades, including the A. Samad Ismail Young Journalist Award at the Malaysia Press Institute (MPI)-PETRONAS Malaysian Journalism Awards (HKM) 2023, the Kenyalang Journalism Award 2023 gold award in sustainability journalism, and the Hadiah Kewartawanan Malaysia 2024 gold award for best feature writing.

Sarah poses with her trophy for the News Reporting Award-English category at the SFC Appreciation and Excellence Service Awards ceremony.

“Receiving the SFC Media Appreciation Award is both an honour and a humbling experience. I am grateful to the Sarawak Forestry Corporation and AZAM Sarawak for recognising the role of the media in shaping public awareness of environmental and sustainability issues.

“This acknowledgment reinforces the responsibility we carry as journalists — to tell stories that inform, educate, and inspire action towards preserving our natural heritage for generations to come,” she said.

Julie Elizabeth Ngadan, Sarawak Tribune’s Lifestyle reporter, claimed the award in the Social Media Reporting-English category, receiving RM1,500 and a trophy.

This marks Julie’s first journalism award, which she earned for her report titled “Reforestation is more than just planting trees.”

“Feeling deeply grateful and humbled to be selected as one of the winners of the SFC Media Appreciation Award, organised by AZAM Sarawak and the Sarawak Forestry Corporation.

“My heartfelt thanks to my editors and colleagues for their constant guidance and encouragement. This recognition strengthens my passion for writing stories that highlight sustainability, environmental stewardship, and the individuals working tirelessly to protect our natural heritage,” she said when contacted as she was not present to receive her award.

The awards aim to acknowledge journalists who have consistently delivered high-quality, accurate, and engaging reports on matters related to Sarawak’s forestry sector.
