BINTULU: Local industry leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) stand as living proof that Sarawakian youth can reach global heights in technical careers, said Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, Datuk Majang Renggi.
Speaking at the closing of the ‘Empowering Knowledge: STEM on Wheels’ program at the Bintulu Civic Centre, Majang urged students not to look far for inspiration, pointing to Malaysia LNG Group of Companies’ Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Abang Jimmy Abang Mordian, as a prime example of local success.
“He developed a strong interest in STEM from a young age and now leads one of the world’s largest LNG assets,” Majang said.
“If Abang Jimmy can achieve this, I am confident that our young people have the exact same potential to excel.”
Abang Jimmy reaffirmed PETRONAS’ commitment to fostering early technical interest through initiatives like ‘STEM on Wheels’, organised in partnership with the Bintulu District Education Office.
The program engaged 38 teachers and 240 students across three secondary schools through a Training of Trainers (TOT) workshop alongside interactive, hands-on learning modules.
“Early exposure to STEM is essential to cultivate the next generation of local engineers,” Abang Jimmy noted, adding that PETRONAS will continue working with government agencies and educators to expand human capital programs targeting future scientists, engineers and innovators.
