SARIKEI: River conservation efforts under the Sarikei parliamentary constituency are being strengthened through the implementation of several strategic projects aimed at safeguarding environmental quality in the district.
Federal Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister, who is Sarikei Member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii, said the initiatives are intended to ensure river water remains clean, safe and suitable for use by local communities.
He said the projects involve river cleaning, deepening, and riverbank reinforcement as early mitigation measures to reduce flood risk, particularly during the monsoon season.
“Beyond preserving river water quality, these projects also aim to raise community awareness on the importance of keeping rivers clean, while supporting sustainable development and the well-being of local residents,” he added.
Huang made the remarks during a site visit for the preparation of the bill of quantities (BQ) for river conservation works in Meradong District, conducted together with officers from the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) today (Feb 11).
Among the locations involved are Sungai Binatang, Palaie, and Meradong, which include one tributary.
Another conservation project covers Sungai Tulai in the Koperasi Tulai and Jalan Tulai areas of Meradong, involving three tributaries.
A third site is located at Sungai Binatang along Jalan Chai Hing, Meradong, and involves one tributary.
The inspection was carried out with DID Assistant Engineer, Alwami Abdullah.
The site visits to all three locations were conducted to ensure that project planning and implementation proceed smoothly and in accordance with the prescribed specifications.
