KUCHING: A fraudulent scheme claiming to offer discounted bill payment services has scammed 97 electricity account holders in Sarawak, prompting a public warning from Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB).
The scam surfaced via a Facebook page offering 30-35 per cent discounts on SESCO bills. Victims, lured by the supposed savings, made payments to a third-party individual, who provided “proof” of payment using bad cheques deposited at Sarawak Energy kiosks.
These cheques, issued by a Malayan company with an expired registration, were rejected by banks, leaving the bills unpaid.
Sarawak Energy said that bill payments should only be made through official channels, such as its customer service counters, payment kiosks, or digital platforms like the SEB cares mobile app and JomPAY. The full list of authorized payment methods is available on Sarawak Energy’s website.
The company urges affected customers to immediately cease communication with the scammer, report the incidents to their banks, and lodge police reports.
